Being Overweight

Galatians 5:22-23 says” But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

You might be saying to yourself what does being overweight has to do with this scripture verse? It has everything to do with it because we are to activate the fruit of the spirit in our lives daily. And the word I want to talk to you concerning overweight is “self-control” when it comes to over-weight people eat more than usual for various reasons and today I don’t want to get into all the reasons as to why. God tells us that we are to have self-control in our lives.

We are to have self-control over our bodies not just when it comes to eating but also with our emotions and our sexual appetite, in other words if you are not married you should not be engaging in premarital sex. When a person has sex before marriage they have no control over their body. When we let our temper get the best of us and we act out we don’t have self-control over it.

When we speak nasty words and negative words we are showing we have no self-control over our mouth. As James says we are not to let our tongue run like a wild horse.

Are you  struggling with your weight?  I want you to know that you can over come it. The key is you have to deny your flesh of what it wants.  Let me share a short story with you. A year ago I gained 20 pounds and I tried my best to drop the weight, to me I did not see myself being over weight but when I did the BMI oh yeah my numbers said I was over weight.  From that day I made my mind up I was going to drop the weight, but like so many people I had good intentions but it did not work. Finally I realized what John meant when he said ” Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

The moment I let that verse become bread to me I lived ate  and prayed on that  to God to help me lose the weight, I was very specific of the areas I wanted the weight to come off of me. Each day I laid hands on the area of my body for the weight to come off and I asked the Lord to give me the strength to go to the gym everyday.

I have over-came that hurdle of being over-weight and I won the VICTORY all because of Jesus Christ. It took Jesus and me six months and I lost a total of 31 pounds instead of the 20 pounds. Everything had to change my eating habits had to change I had to learn to eat serving sizes and eat four meals a day as recommended along with exercises.  I thank God so much because I could not of done this without His help, and yes I am still going to the gym I go three days a week now and the weight has stayed off. I call it “Living Healthy.” I pray my testimony inspires you to know that even if you are not over weight we all have an area in our lives where we don’t have self-control and GOD want His children to have self-control He does not want us letting our flesh control us.

who is in control over your flesh, is it you or is it the sin in your life?

  1. I was just thinking about keeping today healthy by keeping myself in control of everything I did, including diet and exercise. Like so many people, being overweight has been a lifelong struggle. Nearly 11 pounds at birth, typical parents who used the mantra we’ve all heard: “Clean your plate. There are kids in Africa starving.” I didn’t need much prompting, though; I used food like some used alcohol and drugs: to celebrate and to soothe hurts. Then, I discovered cigarettes, which I used to control my weight for 45 years.
Thank you for this timely piece. I view Galatians 5, as entirely appropriate for developing discipline in every area of our lives. Blessings.

  2. God bless you, Desiray–losing weight is no easy trick, but when Jesus works with us, we can do anything.

    1. amen sis we surely can do anything. about two weeks ago I was talking to another sister in Christ and I was telling her how I lost the weight and she said she never looked at laying hands on yourself and praying for the weight to come off. I told her my relationship with Jesus is out the box. For I know He can do amazing things far beyond what my little mind thinks.

  3. Thank you so much for bringing us this word about self control. I know it’s for me too, and I just need to get with God about it. God bless you!
