Proverbs 12:17 says, Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence, but a false witness utters deceit.
Proverbs 16:3 says, Righteous lips are the delight of a king, and he loves him who speaks what is right.
Why do people tell others lies when they have already purposed into their hearts what they are going to do? We tend to see this in our daily activities on the job, at home with family and friends. Someone comes and ask us if we would help them out and instead of us thinking if we can actually help them we open up our mouth so fast and say ” sure I can help”, knowing the moment you walk away your asking yourself, now why did I say “yes” how am I going to tell them now that I can’t do it?
The bible tells us that a man’s word is his integrity which is apart of his character, if a man can’t keep his word then his character speaks volumes of things like he doesn’t keep his promises, or that his word is useless.
This is why God tells us to never make a vow in which you aren’t going to keep. The bible clearly tells us that when we give someone our word we are to do our very best to honor what we said. Which means even if you can’t do it that day you are to make amends and set another day to do the right thing.
In Deuteronomy 23:21-23 says, “If you make a vow to the Lord your God, you shall not delay fulfilling it, for the Lord your God will surely require it of you, and you will be guilty of sin. But if you refrain from vowing, you will not be guilty of sin. You shall be careful to do what has passed your lips, for you have voluntarily vowed to the Lord your God what you have promised with your mouth.
Number 30:2 If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
As you can see God takes it very seriously when we make a vow or promise, we are to do our very best to make it happen. But far to often we don’t we leave the other person hanging in the ballot. Then we sit and come up in our minds how can we get out of it. When you make a promise and don’t keep it people believe what you have told them, they have no reason to doubt you, unless you show them something totally different. But what we neglect to see is that person is waiting on you, their the ones who gets hurt the most. Then we wonder why they have a hard time trusting what we say.
Don’t ever feel pressured that you must always say “yes to someone, it’s not going to hurt you if you say “ let me think about it or say no”. They will trust you for your honesty more than you not keeping your word.
As you go about your day today rather it’s off to work or in the market place remember only say yes if that is truly what you have purposed in your heart to do. If you already purposed in your heart to not do a thing then don’t tell them yes to make them feel good or to make yourself look helpful because in the end you are only making yourself look bad and you have been founded guilty of sin. I know the world likes to call it a little white lie but in God’s eyes a lie is a lie and we don’t live by what the world tells us we live by what God’s word says.
Father God I ask you to forgive us of our short comings, help us to be men and women, of integrity. Let our integrity show the character of the God in us. And Lord remove in us what is not pure in your sight, In Jesus name I pray, AMEN
