Family Disputes

Matthew 10:35-37 says” For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

I want to really stress the word that Matthew states when he says” For I have come to set. This word in the original Greek is dichazo which means to sever or split apart or separate.  When some people read this verse the first thing they believe is that God is going to divide their family. But that is what happens when we don’t take time to study the scriptures.

Our Lord warned his disciples to prepare for persecution. They were to avoid all things which gave advantage to their enemies, all meddling with worldly or political concerns, all appearance of evil or selfishness, and all underhand measures. Christ foretold troubles, not only that the troubles might not be a surprise, but that they might confirm their faith. He tells them what they should suffer, and from whom.

Persecutors are worse than beasts, in that they prey upon those of their own kind. Sufferings from friends and relations are very grievous; nothing cuts more. The connection is this: there will be divisions in families; As disciples of Christ we must not hesitate to side with Jesus rather than with father or mother, or son or daughter.

He that loveth father or mother … – The meaning of this is clear. Christ must be loved supremely, or he is not loved at all. If we are not willing to give up all earthly possessions, and forsake all earthly friends, including our family members for Jesus, but rather obey all others then we have no true attachment to him.

Bottom line God is not telling us to not love our mother, father, sisters and brothers, what HE is telling us is that the day will come when a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. Christ must be supreme above all, and if the members in your house hold causes you to compromise that then what you have done is  that you’re not worthy of Him.

There’s so much more meat in these verses and in most homes today there are family members who have sided with Christ and not with their love ones. I know in our humanism we believe we should always be connected to our family. But truth being told families are breaking up and have come apart. It doesn’t mean that you don’t love them, it means that you have purposed in your heart that you will put Jesus first before anyone.
