John 21:15-17 says” When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” Yes, Lord,” he said, you know that I love you. Jesus said, feed my lambs. Again Jesus said, Simon son of John, do you love me? He answered, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Jesus said, take care of my sheep. The third time he said to him, Simon son of John, do you love me?
This is a beautiful story for Jesus asked a very simple question, “do you love me?” Notice in the story how Simon went around about before he really answered the Master? He gave Jesus answers to the things in which he did. Jesus wanted Simon to follow Him.
What is it about us that when a person ask us a simple question we go through all the emotions, details before we even give an answer to the question? Could it be that we really don’t have an answer and that is why we play word- games?
So, how serious do you take your relationship with Jesus? Are you really taking it serious or are you only serious if it doesn’t require you to give an answer for the hope you have in God? In our lives we take many things serious and the moment anyone tries to hurt or demolish what we care about we will speak up with no hesitation what so ever.
But when it comes to our relationship with Jesus, many of us hide behind play on words, we don’t want people to know just how serious we are about or faith in Jesus. Just like Jesus asked Simon Peter the question “do you love me?” God is asking you, “do you love me?”
