Posting a question like this I leave the door open for all kinds of answers. Now for the sake of argument because you know I don’t argue over God’s word with no one period. For one simple reason. Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you also be like him. Answer a fool as his folly deserves, Lest he be wise in his own eyes Proverbs (26:4-5).

Let’s get down to the real reason why you go to church? Now since this is my devotion I will tell you why I go to church. First, it’s not because of the Pastor, nor the building, or the people. I go to church for one reason and one reason only. Because the Bible says so. When I was a little girl my mother would take us to church and we would be in church for hours on Sunday morning, then turn around and go back that evening. I thought church was my second home. What I didn’t realize was that mother was showing us what the word says. My mother had one slogan in her house if you lived under her roof you go to church unless you were sick, and I am not talking about a sniffle.

When I became older in life I saw the challenges I had to face in life, I found myself wondering If I am going to make it? The ups and downs of life has had its toll on me. But I remember when I was in the house of God something always changed on the inside of me. It was called HOPE.  I always felt better when I left the church then when I entered the door. Yes, I pray at home and I feel much better after it but it’s something when you come into the house of GOD. David himself said I was glad when they said to me let’s go into the house of God. In Deuteronmy 32:30 it says ” How could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the LORD had given them up? Which means the more people are surrounded around your able to fight them off you.

I’ not here to tell you what you should do, because I have heard many people say many things and I call them excuses. If you are breathing you can make it to church. We can’t let our physical issues stop us for that is what the devil wants. Remember your God is bigger then what hinders us.

I am not a perfect Christian but I do try to do what pleases the Lord and some days I come up short, where I literally want to pull my hair out. But what I have come to learn is that when I get in the house of God something in the atmosphere happens. I problems mighty still be there but I got the answer to handle it.

Most people who don’t attend church believes that the moment they are in the doors that everything is fixed. But we neglect to see that Jesus will fix what’s on the inside of us first, then after that is fix it will come through the front door. I can’t do life by myself, if I am left to myself I will destroy everything I touch. And that is why I attend church, my heart desires to please God.  When I don’t attend church it shows in all that I do. Things don’t work right, things and people irritate me, I am short on patience and I don’t like how I allow myself to listen to the enemy.

  1. Maybe some people can afford to not go but for me I can not afford to miss church. One day I might just do a podcast as to why you can’t afford to stay away from the house of GOD

  2. I know the only reason I go to church is because I want to learn more about this Great and Awesome God I heard so much about growing up. That was my sole purpose for attending Mississippi College really: so that I could get closer to Christ. Last semester, I hadn’t really ‘attended’ the church across the street as much as I had when I first attended college as a Freshman because some of the members there made it pretty clear they didn’t have any more room for me to sit with them. (They tried to convince me to sit with the college students but I knew they didn’t have any room for me either) So I watched the Live Stream online. But, I’ve never stopped seeking the Lord although I haven’t been back in church. You’re probably right, though: there is something about entering the House of the Lord because even though I watch the Live Stream, it’s not the same.

  3. I go to church because I need to be reminded each week my desperate need and my great savior who meets that need. It’s easy to forget this but each week I’m there to be reminded of Jesus my savior.

In addition, I like what some have said… “the church isn’t a museum for saints but a hospital for sinners.”

  4. Desiray, I needed this post because for various reasons (most of them not at all legitimate) I have been falling out of the church habit. Slowly but surely I am getting back into it, and what a huge blessing it has been. But you are right in saying that the one real reason to go is that the Bible says to.

May God bless you in your writings and other ministries. I am so glad you are here!

    Love and hugs,

  5. Amen and Amen!
I learned early on in my walk that being saved didn’t mean living a trouble-free life. Just the opposite! But Jesus didn’t promise me a stress free life – He promised me the power to overcome the troubles of this life. Fellowship, testimony, praise and worship, Bible study, as well as Godly friends are all part of the support system found in church (or should be – just saying!) that empowers me. Thank God! and thank you
