Have you looked in the Mirror?

James 1:22-24 say’s Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

Why do we look in the mirror at ourselves? We look in the mirror to see what we look like, to make sure that we look okay. For surely we can’t go out the door with stuff on us that is not right. And yet after we look in the mirror we sometimes take a double take, and why? Did we forget what we just saw?

According to James he says just hearing the word of God is not enough. Hearing and reading God’s word is like looking at a mirror that reflects and reveals what is truly in our lives.

It shows us the way we are and allows us to see what we need to change. With this knowledge, we can choose to respond either with honesty (making a change for the better) or with hypocrisy (refusing to change and pretending everything is all right).

The right response is to ask and allow God to help us conform to the standard of His word by putting it into practice.

  1. Proverbs 27:19
As in water face reflects face, So the heart of man reflects man.

    Psalm 139:23-24
    23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

    1. This verse that you added, is one that I use to struggle with. But after enduring so much over the years, this scripture now brings comfort to me.

      1. Oh I’m so glad this brings you comfort now. Pride is a sneaky thing. We don’t even realize it has a hold of us until we are exposed by God’s beautiful light.
        Ephesians 5:13
But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.
At first we raise our arms in defense to the light, but once a little gets in oh
He does Glorious things when we finally submit lol that’s a tough word for some too. His ways are so wonderful! When we freely open up the heart it allows Him the go ahead to get in there and do what He does best! He makes All things New! He can take the hardest of hearts and transform. He removes the things that do not resemble his image, leaving that crystal clear reflection. Our old ways were like looking into murky waters. If our hearts are filled with Him it’s His Living water that reflects back! His prayer to the Father was to be One! Every time we humble ourselves we let His Guidance enter in. God Bless your growth! It is such a beautiful thing to look back and to see how far He has taken us!

  2. Sadly I’ve noticed a lot of us (people) ignore things that make us uncomfortable. I wrote a blog a little while ago about being the change after God comes into our lives.
    Keep up the great writing.

    1. It’s easier to ignore what’s uncomfortable then to deal with it. That’s why we tend to do it. Still no good reason to do it though

      1. Anytime we don’t face our problems life has a way of making us face them. The beauty of it is that we don’t face them alone, Jesus is right there.
