James 1:22-24 say’s Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
Why do we look in the mirror at ourselves? We look in the mirror to see what we look like, to make sure that we look okay. For surely we can’t go out the door with stuff on us that is not right. And yet after we look in the mirror we sometimes take a double take, and why? Did we forget what we just saw?
According to James he says just hearing the word of God is not enough. Hearing and reading God’s word is like looking at a mirror that reflects and reveals what is truly in our lives.
It shows us the way we are and allows us to see what we need to change. With this knowledge, we can choose to respond either with honesty (making a change for the better) or with hypocrisy (refusing to change and pretending everything is all right).
The right response is to ask and allow God to help us conform to the standard of His word by putting it into practice.
