Hebrews 12:1 says” Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
All through our life we will find ourselves from time to time wrestling with something that we thought we have already dealt with. And just when we thought it was gone and out of our lives here it comes creeping its ugly head again in our lives. There are several reasons as to why this happens it is those besetting sin which so easily beset us. And until we deal with this properly according to the word of God it will always rear its ugly head in our lives.
According to Hebrews 12:1 says.” wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us. You will be surprised at what besetting means and how we all rather you know it or not we will continue to do it until we learn to look to God in these areas of our lives.
The Greek word for “witness” is martyr which means “testifier” they bear testimony of the power of faith and to God’s faithfulness. In the dictionary, the word besetting sins means constantly present.
Here is an example of people in the bible who ran into this besetting sin. Moses, who had a bad temper and of course David, with his weakness for women. They both devoted to God walked humbly and persistently in the will of God, but when they grew weak in faith and weary in their warfare against evil, their besetting sin reared up its ugly head to challenge them.
And so is today with us, we all have besetting sins. It challenges us as well. Many times, when these things happen in our lives we turn our head and pretend it’s not there, or we say it’s a part of me, or I don’t have a problem at all. Understand family lying to ourselves is not the answer neither is it going to help us. It must be removed from one’s life. And how it’s done is when we stand face to face with it.
What does weights and sins mean? It tells us to run with patience it’s the only way of doing it. Laying aside all weights and sin put down those things which so easily besets us like our pride, un-forgiveness, self-conceit, readiness to take offence. Its character is to lay awake waiting for us for it lurks behind the scenes for us.
Lay aside the weight it is anything and everything which weights us for the race, like our bad habits or tendencies within us. Anything that would hinder you or delay you. Each one of us have different weights, what weights me down may not weigh you down. For example, mine may be chocolate and yours may be gossip. Both can control and cause us to not finish the race. It’s a hindrance!
How does one lay aside these weights? We must become strong by putting it aside we must make up our mind that we are not going to put up with it any longer in our lives. We must look to God because without His help we can’t do it in our own strength.
