James 3:6 says’ The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
Of all the body parts that we have the one that we don’t control is the “Tongue.”James focuses now on how easily we sin with our speech. Sinful speech includes harsh and unkind words. For example lying, exaggeration, false teachings, slander, gossiping, hateful comments, dirty jokes and selfish boasting. This is not a full list but you can see just how sinful our tongues are.
Mature Christians keep their tongues under control by relying on the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit and by taking “captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Because we are so laxative with our tongue. James challenges every person to be quick to listen and slow to speak and slow to become angry. Now if we would just practice this all the time. When we are angered it is so easy for our tongue to be loose. We aren’t thinking about being slow to speak. You wanna know why? Because we are so angry we want to get it off our chest.
It’s not until after we reap the consequences that we regret speaking what we said. Why do we do this? Very simple answer in the book of Ecclesiastes 7:9 it says’ Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools. There you have it folks plain and simple.
